Scenarios written for women by society, the “right” age for decisions, artificial boundaries that are not meant to be crossed, standards of appearance and duty — and no one explains why reality changes so slowly.
The Hero in this work is running, yet rigid external structures still impose themselves from above, piercing through the circle entirely.
“It is an illusion that one can preserve autonomy while running. The external world inevitably leaves its marks. You are born free, but throughout life you become covered with norms and rules that shape you into a proper and silent cog in society,” says Olena Koliesnik.
The blurred background visualizes the speed of movement, while the torn edge remains a tactile trace of haste.
Note: A work from the “Escape” section of Olena Koliesnik’s series “Solomon’s Paradox.”The full series consists of 18 works created at the intersection of psychology, exploring reptilian survival instincts and the artist’s lived experience of emigration.
